The plateau - Klafferkessel
the many lakes is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Europe. From
the Ice Age glaciers two interlocking plateaus were formed. The trail of the hut
Gollinghütte to the 2.618m high mountain - Greifenberg and down to the hut Preintalerhütte
leads through the Klafferkessel and their tree-free zone at an altitude of
around 2.300m. From the summit Greifenberg you’ll get a fantastic panoramic
view to the 30 larger and smaller mountain lakes. The trail has down from the
mountain Greifenberg to the lakes in the Klafferkessel a short section which
must be secured with a rope and therefore is a bit challenging. Especially nice
is the Greifenstein, enthroned as a large block of rock above the
Klafferkessel. For demanding, long mountain tour between the both huts Gollinghütte
and Preintalerhütte you must take a time of approximately 8 hours of which are about
6-7 hours walking time. The nice hut Gollinghütte was built in 1904 and is an
excellent starting point for some lovely walks in the Schladming Tauern.
Besides the tour of the Klafferkessel and the mountains on the Hochgolling,
with 2.862m, the highest mountain in the Lower Tauern, the trips to the
Landawirseen, Gollingwinkel and the hut Keinprechthütte on the Tauern mountain
trail yet another very beautiful hiking destinations.
From the hut Gollinghütte leads a moderate trail Nr.702 around 800 altimeters
up to the saddle - Greifenbergsattel. While walking up in the morning shade the
sun rises on the opposite mountains. Particularly the majestic sunrise on the
mountain Hochgolling is very impressive. The view towards to the north extends
until to the Dachsteinglacier. At 2.200 m you’ll reach the first morning the
sun's rays. Until the second recommended rest at the saddle – Greifenbergsattel
and the beautiful lake – Sattelsee on 2.450m there are now grasping for about
1000m. The lake Sattelsee is one of the highest lakes in the alps - Niedere
Tauern. The last 170 altimeters, the trail leads often over boulders and rocks
block to the highest point on this hike the mountain - Greifenberg 2.618m. The
summit offers enough space for about 30 walkers for a long rest. From there you’ll
have the best view to the plateau Klafferkessel with the many lakes and varnishes.
Down from the mountain Greifenberg leads a steep trail to Klafferkessel and a
short medium difficult passage is secured with a fixed rope. The stony trail
offers yet not difficult section of rock block. Surrounded by a rocky scenery,
always slightly rising and falling, the trail leads through some larger and
smaller lakes. Plant lovers will find in the Arctic lakes, some plants that are
otherwise found only in more northern areas. The lake - Oberer Klaffersee is
just a few meters from the trail. Near the exit of the Klafferkessel you’ll
pass the large rock Greifenstein. This is a popular motive for many many
photographers.
In the nick - Untere Klafferscharte 2.290m you leave the wonderful countryside
and lakes. Now the trail leads you down with large bows to the section -
Äusseres Lämmerkar. The landscape character changes from alpine mountains again
to lovely alpine pastures. At last you’ll reach over lush green pastures the
hut - Preintalerhütte 1.656m. The Preintalerhütte is located in the heart of
the Schladminger Tauern and is like the Gollinghütte a very good day-trip
destination, ideal starting point for many transitions and peaks and a stopping
point for hikers on the Tauern trail. With 16 beds and 140 mattresses the
Preintalerhütte offers for large groups, a good place to stay.
