Even the arrival with the car of Altaussee on the 9 km long panoramic toll road to the Loser mountain restaurant (1601m) offers many good viewpoints and is in itself very well worth seeing. On days with good weather you can see also the Dachstein glacier.

The mountain tour from the Loser mountain restaurant to the summit Loser at 1.837m is not difficult and suitable for children over 10 years. However, you should wear good walking shoes, so you have a good slip resistance.
One should also ensure that you remain on the trail, because it is like to see in the photos, off the trails is pretty much the same time vertical downhill. For the hiking tour on the Loser you need about 2.5 to 3 hours.

The first stop on the Loser tour is the alp lake Augstsee. He is only 500 meters long and 70 meters wide. The 600m long circumnavigation of the Augstsees with a few short breaks takes ca. 20min.
Who is not in a hurry should definitely make the circumambulation of the Augstsees, because it's very interesting how the colour of the water changed after each sun exposure.

After the lake Augstsee starts the 1.2kilometer climb to the Hochanger. Especially in the last third after the "Loser Fenster" is the trail very steep and stage. In this section you see very well the typical karst rock of the dead mountains. The last 350m up to the weather station on Hochanger are almost flat. From the weather station on Hochanger you see already the top of the Loser. The visibility at Hochanger is on fine clear days already very beautiful, but because it would be to the Loser and back only 150 altimeters it would be pity, when you renounce to hike the Loser. The path from Hochanger down to the Laces field between Loser and Hochanger requires some sure-footed as it is steep and rocky. The road from the Laces field up to the Loser summit is not so steep, but it crosses the slope and the road has to several meters a strong lateral gradient. Shortly before the summit of Losers you go out to an imposing rock column over before you reach the summit after 3.3 kilometers you cross the small plateau of the Loser on 1.837m.
On the Loser you have a particularly good view to the east into the Dead Mountains, south of the Dachstein Glacier, lake Altaussee and west to Schafberg, Wolfgangsee, Mondsee, Gosaukamm etc. Also, some snow-covered peaks around the Grossglockner be seen.

After a long break, we have declined the same path back to the Loser mountain restaurant. But it is also possible that you go from Laces field between Loser and Hochanger on the road No.255 to Loseralm down to 1.498m. To the
starting point by the mountain-free restaurant you hike over the last 600m on the Loser Panorama Road.
The Loser in the Styrian Salzkammergut Altaussee is considered the symbol of the Ausseerland.
The name dates back to medieval as the residents have risen very often on the mountain Loser to listen (in the local dialect "losen"), if from Ennsvalley is some noise of battle.
