The MTB - Tour Planai in Schladming is an official and as "02 Planai - Runde" well-marked mountain bike tour in Schladming - Dachstein Tauern region. The starting point and finish of this scenic, spectacular MTB - Tour is the Planaistation, right on the edge of the town of Schladming. Except for the downhill stretch on the final slope the Planai mountain bike tour requires no special technical skills. And the final part on the downhill track can be avoided very easily. From the starting point Planaistation you drive on the MTB tour Planai first on the southern outskirts of Schladming in the west. After about 700m begins the wide and 2.2 kilometers long gravel road in Talbachklamm where we go from Schladming to Rohrmoos - Untertal. The average slope in the Talbachklamm is only 5 percent. Please watch out for the hikers and walkers. Also, the next 2.7 kilometers on the Untertalstraße towards Riesachsee only have an average gradient of 4%. At kilometer 5.7, turn left on Janerbrücke and then travels back on the opposite side toward to the Enns valley. On the "Fastenbergweg" road, you travel on your mountain bike to Fastenberg above Schladming. Along the 5 kilometers long "Fastenbergweg" you have many wonderful mountain view points such as to Rohrmoos, Hochwurzen, Dachstein and Bishofspitze. In this section, there is almost a kilometer long 9% slope. The Fastenbergroad is currently not always asphalted, and therefore not suitable for road bikers. Before you reach the Planaistraße you can relax on a small descent.
In Fastenberg at 10.8 km - 1107m starts the 9 kilometers long and average of 8.2% increase to the mountain station of Planaibahn at Km 19.6 - 1826m. Until the mid station of the Planai at kilometer 13 the road is paved. Immediately thereafter, from the toll there is only a rolled, compact gravel road that is wide enough that 2 trucks pass each other comfortably. The last 600 meters before the Planai mountain station are not so steep, and you can already enjoy the magnificent view. With good long distance view, I also recommend everyone to walk 20 minutes to the summit cross on the Planai at 1906m. As you can see on the photos of the mountain bike tour Planai the view is simply fantastic. Rarely, there are on a mountain bike ride such a great panorama. The path on the Planai MTB - Tour back to Schladming first runs along the blue signs for the families - downhill track at the Schafalm past (see video No.45). Immediately after the Schafalm and before the downhill starts again as one leaves the family downhill track and turn left to Märchenwiese hut. The forest path leads us on Lärchkogel and at kilometer 22.7 you reach again the road on the Planai. Along the Planai road you're going back towards the Planai middle station. At kilometer 30.6 you have to decide whether you turn left toward the downhill on the steep final slope of the Planai, or want comfortably finish the mtb-tour on the Planai road. (green line - Google Map). Since there is next to the Ennstal highway a narrow footpath and cycle path, you need not go back on the road to Schladming. The downhill track (red line - Google Map) is recommended only for skilled and experienced mountain bikers. The best Downhiller ride all the downhill stretch in less than seven minutes. The video is from my first downhill on the target slope. Without much experience in Downhill, without a special bike, without patrons, without full-face helmet, without route knowledge and at my dear family waiting at home, needs a "completely normal mountain bikers" so for the last kilometer, almost five minutes.
The wonderful Planai Mountain bike tour will end immediately after the downhill back to the large parking lot directly to the base station of the Planai. |
